Pakistan to beef up its security on border with Afghanistan on election day: FO

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan said on Thursday that it will beef up its security along its border with Afghanistan as the war-torn country is gearing up for a presidential vote to choose a successor to President Hamid Karzai on April 5.

Afghanistan will hold its third presidential and provincial council elections since the fall of the Taliban on Saturday. However, the Afghan Taliban have vowed a campaign of violence to disrupt the polls, urging their fighters to attack polling staff, voters and security forces in the run-up to election day.

“Security will be beefed up on the borders with Afghanistan on the day of elections there,” the Pakistani foreign office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam during her weekly media briefing in Islamabad on Thursday.

The FO spokesperson said that Pakistan fully supports democratic process in Afghanistan.

“We recognize the steps taken by the Afghan authorities for peaceful conduct of elections,” Aslam added.
