Pakistan demands immediate cessation of US drone strikes

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Pakistan on Wednesday condemned the US drone strike carried out in the North Waziristan tribal region earlier in the morning, and demanded an immediate end to such strikes in future.

A US drone strike was carried out in Kund Sar area of Shawal tehsil in North Waziristan agency on Wednesday morning that left at least six militants killed and three others injured. The sources said that the drone fired two missiles at a militant compound.

“Pakistan regards such strikes as a violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity and demands their immediate cessation,” the Foreign Office spokesperson Tasneem Aslam said in a statement.

The spokesperson said the government of Pakistan is itself taking decisive action against terrorist elements in North Waziristan, thus rendering such strikes completely unnecessary.

The Pakistan’s army has been carrying a full-fledged military operation against the militants in North Waziristan called as ‘Zarb-e-Azb’, as well as in Khyber agency since a couple of months as a part of efforts to end militancy in the country.

On Tuesday, the Pakistan’s military also carried out precise aerial strikes in North Waziristan and killed 20 militants, according to the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR).

The military said that more than 1,200 militants including foreigners and important commanders have been killed so far while over 360 injured during the operation Zarb-e-Azb.
