NEW DELHI, India: The Pakistani high commissioner to India Abdul Basit said on Wednesday that Islamabad desires normal neighborly relations with New Delhi.

His remarks came days after the Indian government called off the foreign secretary level talks with Pakistan scheduled to be held in Islamabad on August 25 after Basit met separatist leaders from Kashmir, invoking sharp reaction from political quarters in India.

In his address at a news conference in New Delhi on Wednesday, the Pakistani envoy said that Pakistan wants resolution of all outstanding issues through meaningful and result oriented dialogue process.

The Pakistani envoy said that both the countries need to work together for promotion of peace in the region. He said that peace is in the best interest of both the countries.

Basit said that Pakistan has declared cancellation of foreign secretaries’ level meeting as set back to its sincere efforts for promoting peace in the region.

The envoy said that both the countries need to work together to improve bilateral relations. He said that Pakistan still stands by to its commitments as per the vision of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to improve ties with India.

Abdul Basit said that time has arrived that both the countries need to move forward. He said that Pakistan is sincere in its efforts to build bilateral relationships with India on the basis of equality.
