ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Director General Geological Survey of Pakistan (GSP) Dr Imran Khan Wednesday informed the Sub-Committee of Public Accounts Committee (PAC) that Pakistan was self-sufficient in nuclear fuel and needed to expand the basic survey of Uranium exploration.

He was replying to a query of committee member Shahida Akhtar Ali about discovery of Uranium reservoirs in different part of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including Lakki Marwat.

“Good reservoirs of Uranium have been discovered in different areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the basic survey is needed to be expanded,” the DG added.

He said the exploration activities, which were going on, needed to be further accelerated, adding “Pakistan is self-sufficient in nuclear fuel.”

The Sub-Committee-III, which discussed audit paras of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources’ attached departments for the year 2009-10, was chaired by Convener Sardar Ashiq Hussain Gopang.

The meeting was attended among others by the committee members Dr Arif Alvi and Shahida Akhtar Ali, Auditor General of Pakistan, Secretary Ministry of Petroleum besides representatives of Law and Justice Division, Oil and Gas Development Company Limited, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited and Government Holdings (Pvt.) Limited.

Later, talking to the state-run news agency, the DG said the explored Uranium was of the good quality and it was essential to reach the main source of the mineral.

According to a latest survey, Dr Imran said that Pakistan had tremendous reservoirs of different kinds of gemstones for which concerted efforts were required to explore them.
