ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: In a meeting with the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Alice Wells, Pakistan Officials emphasized the need to diversify the Pak-US relationship with particular focus on enhanced economic and trade cooperation and people to people contacts.

The delegation level talks led by the Additional Secretary (Americas) Aftab Khokhar from the Pakistani side were held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad on Tuesday after the US Department of State’s Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Ambassador Alice Wells reached Pakistan earlier in the day.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Defence also attended the meeting.

The meeting took stock of the understanding reached between the Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to rebuild the Pakistan-US relationship based on mutual trust and respect.

In the meeting, evolving regional situation and peace and stability in Afghanistan were also discussed.

The US delegation appreciated the need to strengthen the bilateral relationship with Pakistan which was an important country of the region.

The two sides agreed to continue efforts to promote the shared objectives of peace and stability in the region and diversify bilateral relationship.

Separately, Alice Wells also held a meeting with the Finance Minister Asad Umar.
