LAHORE, Pakistan: The Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) has announced to stage countrywide protests against the report prepared by a joint investigation team (JIT) regarding Last year’s Model Town firing incident.
In its report, the five-member JIT declared Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and the former provincial law minister Rana Sanaullah not guilty. However, the JIT held the SP Security Salman Khan and a few other police officials responsible for the incident which eventually caused deaths of 11 workers of Dr Tahirul Qadri’s PAT party.
In a press conference in Lahore on Thursday, the PAT President Raheeq Abbasi and Secretary General Khurram Nawaz Gandapur said that they would hold protests across the country and demanded the transfer of the case to a military court.
Last year one June 17, severe clashes erupted between Punjab police and the PAT activists in Model Town area of Lahore which left at least 11 supporters of the political party dead and over 100 people injured.
Later on November 13, the government formed a five-member JIT which included CCPO Quetta Abdul Razzaq Cheema, Senior Superintendent of Police Rana Shahzad Akbar, DSP Crime Investigation Agency Khalid Abubakar and one official each from the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) & Intelligence Bureau (IB) to probe into the Model Town incident.
