ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday directed to expedite the steps taken for the establishment of border markets, and formulate a comprehensive strategy on an immediate basis.

While presiding over a review meeting on the progress of the establishment of border markets at the Pak-Afghan and Pak-Iran border areas in Islamabad, the prime minister said that the establishment of these markets is of utmost importance for the prosperity of the people living in the merged districts and the border areas of Balochistan.

The meeting was attended by the Prime Minister’s Adviser for Commerce and Investment Abdul Razak Dawood, the Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on National Security Division and Strategic Policy Planning Dr. Moeed Yusuf, the Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Revenue Dr. Waqar Masood, the Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Political Communication Dr. Shahbaz Gill, and Senior Officers.

The Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Syed Ali Haider, and concerned Senior Officials attended the meeting via video link.

The meeting was briefed on the draft PC-1 of 18 proposed border markets, four of which will be set up under a pilot project, and the progress made so far in negotiations with the Iranian and Afghan Officials.

The prime minister said that the establishment of border markets will not only provide employment opportunities to the local population but will also help in curbing smuggling.
