Islamabad, Pakistan: The Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan has written a congratulatory letter to President of Russian Federation Vladimir Putin in reference to Victory Day May 9.

According to the spokesperson of Pakistan Foreign Office, Prime Minister Imran Khan in this letter lauded the unparalleled resolve and heroism of the Russian people (former Soviet Union) and honoured their sacrifices during WWII.

PM Imran Khan mentioned that people from present-day formed a large part of the British war effort in WWII and made ultimate sacrifice.

As grapples with complex challenges, PM Khan underlined the need to rekindle spirit that animated diverse nations and peoples to work for a common cause.

 


Islamabad Bureau adds:

It may be mentioned that Victory Day is celebrated on May 9 to commemorates the surrender of Nazi Germany in 1945.

It was first inaugurated in the 15 republics of the Soviet Union, following the signing of the German Instrument of Surrender late in the evening on 8 May 1945 (after midnight, thus on 9 May Moscow Time).

The Soviet government announced the victory early on 9 May after the signing ceremony in Berlin.

Though the official inauguration occurred in 1945 the holiday became a non-labour day only in 1965 and only in certain Soviet republics.

It may be further mentioned that history indicates that the graveyard of Nazi forces were areas those are now parts of Independent Ukraine and May 9 Victory was ensured by people of all the former Soviet Union SSRs in Eastern Europe.
