ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Monday underlined the need for further enhancing economic relations between Pakistan and Azerbaijan.

In a meeting with the Ambassador of Azerbaijan Ali Alizada at the PM Office in Islamabad, the prime minister said both Pakistan and Azerbaijan needed early conclusion of agreements on preferential tariff and trade, investment, energy and other areas to attain optimum level of bilateral economic cooperation.

The prime minister said Pakistan and Azerbaijan traditionally enjoyed close, cordial relations marked by trust and understanding.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi noted bilateral collaboration in different sectors was growing steadily, and recalled the visit of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev to participate in the 13th Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Summit in March 2017.

Abbasi appreciated Azerbaijan’s continued support on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute and its invaluable role in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir.

The prime minister also reiterated Pakistan’s principled position on the Nagorno-Karabakh issue.

Earlier in the day, the newly appointed Naval Chief Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi also met the prime minister in Islamabad and discussed professional matters pertaining to Pakistan Navy.

The prime minister congratulated Admiral Zafar Mahmood on assuming the office of the Naval Chief. He expressed the confidence that Pakistan Navy will further progress under his able command.
