VALLETTA, Malta: Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has greeted Baroness Patricia Scotland on her election as the new Secretary General of Commonwealth.
In a meeting with Baroness Scotland here on the sidelines of Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting late Friday night, the Prime Minister said Pakistan was committed to the Commonwealth’s values of democracy, freedom, peace and rule of law.
Baroness Scotland expressed gratitude for the support extended by Pakistan during the election.
She said that Pakistan was an important member of the Commonwealth and she looked forward to working closely on all issues of mutual interest.
The Prime Minister extended Baroness Scotland an invitation to visit Pakistan at her earliest convenience.
The new Secretary General was elected during the CHOGM’s Executive Session through straw poll – an adhoc or unofficial vote that provides dialogue among movements within larger groups. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had caste his vote along with other Commonwealth leaders on Friday.
