ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammed Chaudhry took suo motu notice against the unwarranted hike in prices of petroleum products by the petrol stations without any official notification; a three-member bench of Supreme Court of Pakistan will hear the case today.

It should be mentioned here that SC Registrar sent to the CJ Chaudhry a note prepared in the light of a report in electronic media, saying the prices of POL products have been raised in the name of one percent increase in GST.

The note states that the GST increase has been just proposed which will be come into effect from July following its approval and discussion in National Assembly and subsequent presidential signature on it.

The Registrar’s note says the petrol stations are charging the enhanced prices from the consumers; but, it is not clear if they hiked the prices of their own accord or such directives were given by the government.

The CJ declaring the note as constitutional petition, fixed it for hearing today and issued notices to all concerning parties including Attorney General of Pakistan Muneer A. Malik, who will appear before the court to represent the federal government in connection with the increment in petroleum products.

A three-member bench of the apex court will include CJ Chaudhry as its head, Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Aijaz Ahmed.
