KARACHI, Pakistan: A special week-long polio vaccination campaign began in eight most sensitive union councils (UCs) of Karachi on Monday during which over 240,000 children under five years of age will be administered polio drops.
The high-risk UCs are Manghopir, Muzaffarabad, Muslimabad, Gujro, Songal, Ittehad Town, Chishti Nagar and Islamia Colony.
On Sunday, a meeting was held in Karachi to review security and other arrangements for the campaign.
The meeting was attended by the Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui, the deputy commissioners, the Executive District Officer (EDO) Health, and representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and law enforcement agencies.
The officials said that 100 female community volunteers would spearhead the polio campaign instead of mobile polio teams as a general practice.
Last year, 23 out of 30 polio cases in the southern Sindh province were reported from Karachi.
