Government of PakistanPolitical stability, continuation of policies prerequisite for growth: Ahsan Iqbal

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Minister for Interior and Planning & Development Ahsan Iqbal on Wednesday said political stability and continuation of policies were prerequisite to accelerated growth and prosperity in the Country.

In his address at the 33rd Annual General Meeting and Conference of Pakistan Society of Development Economics in Islamabad, the minster referred to the phenomenal progress achieved by the Countries like China, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, and said all of them performed well because of continuity of policies and political stability.

The minister said 60s was described as golden era of development in Pakistan but the growth was not inclusive and it created regional and social disparities.

Ahsan Iqbal said the Country moved on the path of industrialization in 60s but the development process was stopped due to nationalization policy of the then Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government.

The Planning and Development Minister said Pakistan introduced prudent economic policies in the beginning of 90s but because of successive dismissal of elected governments, the Country could not benefit from these policies.

Similar policies, he added, were introduced by neighbouring India and Bangladesh and their economies progressed remarkably.
