ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced on Monday that by-elections for NA-149 Multan-II constituency will be held on October 16.
The ECP said that nomination papers would be received on September 22 and 23 and their scrutiny will be held on the following two days.
It said that candidates can withdraw their names by September 30 and the final list of the candidates would be published next day.
The seat fell vacant due to resignation of Makhdoom Javed Hashmi on September 2.
Hashmi resigned from his National Assembly seat during the joint session of the parliament, a couple of days after he distanced himself from the protest sit-ins organised by the PTI and the PAT in Islamabad when the two parties decided to mount a march on the official residence of the prime minister.
It was reported earlier that Javed Hashmi would contest the by-election from NA-149 as an independent candidate; however, he would have a full support of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
