Polling underway in UK general elections

LONDON: The UK general elections are underway on Thursday through which new 650-member House of Commons will be elected for the next five years.

It is estimated that about 50 million people will cast their votes to elect their future lawmakers and executives at about 50,000 polling stations established across the country.

Besides the general elections, more than 9,000 council seats are also being contested in local elections. Mayors will be elected in Bedford, Copeland, Leicester, Mansfield, Middlesbrough and Torbay.

The 2015 general elections in the United Kingdom are being considered as the most unpredictable polls in decades as no political party including Prime Minister David Cameron’s centre-right Conservative party and Ed Miliband’s centre-left Labour party is in a position to win a clear majority.

Therefore, the role of smaller parties will be vital and the United Kingdom is most likely to have a weak government in future.
