ISLAMABAD: A high-level meeting of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) on Tuesday decided to stick to the party’s proposed names for the caretaker prime minister, Dispatch News Desk (DND) reported.
The PPP leaders’ meeting was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf to discuss the deadlock between the government and opposition regarding appointment of the caretaker prime minister.
The meeting also devised strategy for prime minister’s talks with the opposition leader.
Syed Yusuf Raza Gillani‚ Khursheed Shah‚ Qamar Zaman Kaira‚ Nazar Mohammad Gondal‚ Salim H. Mandviwala and Hina Rabbani Khar attended the meeting.
The PPP-led government and the opposition have time till midnight to reach an agreement over a name for the post of caretaker prime minister before the process for selection goes to a parliamentary committee.
Under the constitution, if parties fail to evolve a consensus over the issue then after 12:00 am tonight the matter would be referred to an eight-member bipartisan parliamentary committee.
In case, the parliamentary committee also fails to nominate a consensus candidate within three days, the matter will automatically go to the Election Commission, which will have to finalise one name out of four, two each from the PPP and the PML-N, for the post of caretaker prime minister within two days.
