ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Minister for Science and Technology Syed Shibli Faraz has said that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government is committed toward electoral reforms in the Country.

Talking to media in Islamabad on Thursday, the minister said that to this end, Prime Minister Imran Khan had assigned the task to the Ministry of Science and Technology to prepare Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) to eliminate human interference in the elections process.

Shibli Faraz said that after preparing a prototype of the EVM, the ministry demonstrated its functions before the Parliamentarians and Members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The minister said that EVMs will help ensure free, fair, and impartial elections with credible results.

The science and technology minister said that organizing transparent, free, and fair elections is the prime responsibility and mandate of the ECP and the government does not believe in interfering to its domain. He said that the ECP can also import such a machine if it feels doubt in the EVM prepared locally.

Syed Shibli Faraz urged the ECP to encourage the use of modern technology to ensure credible results.

The minister said that the government also invited the opposition to evaluate the performance of the EVM and table their suggestion for further improvement but unfortunately, it refused.

Furthermore, he said that the formation of a Joint Parliamentary Committee on electoral reforms by the Speaker National Assembly is a welcoming sign.
