Elections 2013Punjab cabinet gives consent to LG polls on party basis

LAHORE: The Punjab cabinet on Saturday approved the proposal for holding local government elections on party basis in the province, paving the way for the issuance of an ordinance by the provincial government amending the LB Act 2013.

The proposal was approved in a cabinet meeting of the Punjab government which met under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to review the proposal for holding of local bodies elections on party basis.

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday in its ruling ordered the Punjab government to hold local government elections across the province on party basis, saying that holding local government elections in Punjab on non-party basis would be a violation of the constitution.

A two-member bench of the LHC comprising Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial and Justice Farrukh Irfan Khan had announced the verdict in response to a petition filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Pakistan People’s Party, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid, and Majlis-i-Wahdat-i-Muslimeen challenging the non-party elections and the Punjab government’s jurisdiction to carry out delimitation of LG constituencies.
