LAHORE: The Punjab government is ready to hold local government elections in the province on December 7, the Election Commission was told.
In its request to the commission, the provincial government stated that objections regarding delimitation will be removed in one week, adding that after that the notification for delimitation will be issued.
The Supreme Court of Pakistan has repeatedly called upon provincial governments to conduct polls at the earliest.
On Monday, during proceedings of the local bodies elections, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry directed the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to complete legislation regarding the local bodies elections prior to its next appearance to the court.
Meanwhile, Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah has criticised the failure of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government over holding local government elections.
“What happened to the KPK government’s claim of holding polls within six months? The Punjab government has already given a date,” Sanaullah said.
