ISLAMABAD: The federal minister for information Pervaiz Rasheed said on Friday that the Sindh government’s decision to remove Karachi’s police chief AIGP Shahid Hayat is imprudent and the Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah should review the decision.
The Sindh government on Thursday on the directives of the Supreme Court of Pakistan removed all own pay scale (OPS) officers of the provincial police department including Karachi’s police chief Shahid Hayat.
In a statement issued in Islamabad on Friday, the information minister said that AIG Police Shahid Hayat is a good police officer and the Sindh government has itself chosen him.
The information minister further said that law and order is basically the responsibility of the provincial government.
The minister said the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had taken the initiative last year keeping in view the gravity of the situation in Karachi. He convened the cabinet meeting and extended full cooperation to the Sindh government.
It was decided that the provincial government will lead the operation and the Chief Minister Sindh will be captain of the operation, the minister said.
Rasheed said that during the last eleven months, the prime minister visited Karachi ten times, reviewed the operation and gave complete ownership of the operation to the provincial government. He said that Rangers remained at the disposal of the provincial government and Director General Rangers Sindh himself looked after the operation.
