ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Special Assistant on National Health Services Dr Zafar Mirza on Monday said revolutionary reforms were being introduced in the health sector to ensure universal health coverage.

While addressing an International Conference on Medical Education in Islamabad on Monday, he said health and education were the foremost priorities of the present government to transform Pakistan into a welfare state.

Dr Zafar Mirza said the government had dissolved Pakistan Medical and Dental Council, and Pakistan Medical Commission Ordinance had been enforced. He said the medical commission was aimed at improving the regulatory regime as well as the syllabus of medical field as per the international standards.

The special assistant said all people living below the poverty line would be provided with the health card by the end of next year. He said about 300 public-private hospitals were on the panel of Sehat Insaf Card.

Under that scheme, he added, the people could get free medical treatment of up to Rs 720,000.
