ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan was asked on Thursday to remove the travel ban on the former military ruler General (retd) Pervez Musharraf, a day after the federal government rejected his application for exclusion of his name from the Exit Control List (ECL).
The petition was filed by Shah Jehan Advocate, making the interior ministry and the federal government respondents. In his petition, he said that Musharraf was a former president and chief of the armed forces and should be allowed to visit his ailing mother in Dubai.
The petitioner noted that Musharraf’s basic right of movement was being affected due to the travel restriction as according to basic human rights a person could move freely.
On Wednesday, the federal government rejected the application of the former president for exclusion of his name from the ECL, saying the application cannot be accepted in the public interest as a number of cases are pending against him in various courts.
