PoliticsSC declares ECP’s petition for delaying LB polls non-maintainable

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday returned a petition filed by Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) seeking to delay local bodies elections across the country by March 2014, declaring that the petition was non-maintainable.

The apex court ruled that all petitions regarding local bodies polls had already been disposed off, and declared the current petition as non-maintainable.

On Monday, the ECP filed the petition in the apex court seeking to delay local bodies elections across the country by March 2014.

In its petition, the ECP stated that since the printing of ballot papers is impossible within a very short time, the rules and regulations prepared by the provinces carry legal flaws, therefore, the holding of local government elections is not possible.

To seek deferment of elections, the ECP also cited reasons of allotment of election symbols in Punjab for party-based elections, besides the matter of local councils in the province.
