LAHORE, Pakistan: The Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has been elected un-opposed as the acting President of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

The decision was taken at the meeting of the PML-N Central Working Committee (CWC) Chaired by the PML-N Chairman Raja Zafar-Ul-Haq at Model Town in Lahore on Tuesday.

The CWC also elected the former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif as the “PML-N’s Quaid for life”.

“Congratulations & a big hug to @CMShehbaz,” the PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz said in her twitter account. “We are, Alhamdolillah ONE. We stand united. PMLN stands united.”

“PMLN elects Nawaz Sharif as its QUAID for life. Raja Zafarul Haq, PM Abbasi & CM SS proposal elicited a resounding approval from CWC,” Maryam Nawaz told.

The top PML-N leadership including Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Prime Minister Azad Jammu & Kashmir Raja Farooq Haider, Punjab Governor Rafique Rajwana, Sindh Governor Muhammad Zubair, Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Khawaja Saad Rafique, and Mushahidullah Khan among others attended the meeting.

Talking to media following the meeting, the PML-N leader Senator Mushahidullah Khan said the PML-N General Council meeting would be held Islamabad in March 6 at which Shahbaz Sharif would officially be elected as the President of PML-N.

Mushahidullah said PML-N respected judiciary and institutions, and they acted upon Courts’ every decision.

“It isn’t Court’s prerogative to dismiss public representatives from posts,” he said.

The PML-N leader said action against Nawaz Sharif wasn’t only against him but against democracy and the nation. He said political struggle would remain continue until the supremacy of civil institutions.

The PML-N CWC meeting was summoned to elect the party’s interim president as the Supreme Court of Pakistan on February 22 in its judgement in response to multiple petitions filed against Election Act 2017 ruled against Nawaz Sharif as the president of the ruling party, saying that a disqualified person under articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution couldn’t serve as the head of a political party.
