MediaShireen Mazari laments opposition’s conduct over PMDA bill

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Expressing astonishment over the conduct of the opposition, the Federal Minister for Human Rights Dr. Shireen Mazari has said that so far Pakistan Media Development Authority (PMDA) draft has not been finalized so what is the opposition talking about rejecting it in the Parliament?

In a series of tweets on Tuesday, Shireen Mazari said that the Minister for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhry Fawad Hussain has confirmed that no draft has been shared because it has yet to be given a final shape before being sent to the Committee for Disposal of Legislative Cases (CCLC), and from where it will be debated and then sent to the Federal Cabinet for approval to be placed in the National Assembly.

Shireen Mazari said that what is now awaiting approval from the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Human Rights, headed by the Chairman Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, is our journalist protection bill that was drafted in consultation with stakeholders and approved by the Standing Committee on Human Rights.

The minister asked media workers and journalists Hamid Mir, Mazhar Abbas, and Nasim Zehra to ask for the journalist protection bill to be expedited by the Sub-Committee of the Standing Committee on Human Rights.

“Many human rights bills are delayed for months in the Committee unfortunately,” she lamented.
