KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly on Thursday adopted a bill to withdraw the Sindh Peoples Local Government Ordinance (SPLGO) 2012 and to restore the Local Bodies Act of 1979, Dispatch News Desk (DND) reported.
Sindh Law Minister Ayaz Soomro tabled the bill before the house pertaining to withdrawal of SPLGO 2012 and reinstatement of Local Government Act 1979 amid strong protest by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) whose PMAs gathered at the Speaker’s dice and later boycotted the proceedings.
During the proceedings, MQM’s Faisal Sabzwari delivered his fiery speech in the house and termed the revocation of the SPLGO as injustice to the people of Sindh.
“If the SPLGA 2012 was meant to bring prosperity to the people of Sindh at that time [when the government passed it], then why is it not prosperous now?” Sabzwari questioned while speaking to the media.
The SPLGO, which was approved by the Sindh Assembly on 1 October, last year after PPP-MQM understanding, drew strong condemnation from nationalist parties of Sindh, with wheel-jam and shutter-down strikes by Sindh Bachao Committee flowing approval of the bill.
