JALALABAD, Afghanistan: Two police officers among six people were dead while 11 others were injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up on Wednesday near the Pakistani Consulate in Jalalabad, the eastern City in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province.

In a statement, the Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman Najib Danish confirmed the blast near the Pakistani Consulate but said the building was the primary target or not, is yet to be determined.

“The incident occurred near the Pakistani consulate, but we are not sure if it was the intended target,” Najib Danish said.

Meanwhile, according to media reports, a gun battle was still going on between the Afghan security forces and terrorists in the area.

No person or group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

The blast took place a few days after Pakistan hosted the first meeting of Quadrilateral Contact Group in Islamabad, aiming at to finding out ways to end militancy in the Afghanistan and bring stability.

In the meeting at which representatives from Afghanistan, United States and China also participated, Pakistan suggested that no pre-conditions should be set to start the negotiation process between the Afghan government and the Taliban as well as certain confidence building measures (CBMs) can play a key role in encouraging insurgent groups to join the negotiation process.
