KABUL, Afghanistan: In another unfortunate incident occurred on Saturday in insurgency hit-Afghanistan, at least 91 people were killed while over 200 further sustained injuries.
The casualties took place at the Deh Mazang Square in Kabul where a demonstration was being carried out but in the meantime, two suicide blasts struck the protesters.
The media reports said that there were two suicide blasts which caused massive casualties. However, few reports suggested that there were three suicide bombers at the rally.
Thousands of people belonging to ethnic Hazara Community were staging a rally in the Afghan Capital to register their protest against a controversial power line project but blasts ripped them through.
“As a result of the attack 80 people were martyred and 231 others were wounded,” said a statement issued by the Afghan Interior Ministry.
“Based on initial information, the attack was carried out by three suicide bombers… The third attacker was gunned down by security forces,” the ministry said.
The dead and injured were rushed to Istiqlal hospital, according to the Afghan Health Ministry Spokesman Muhammad Ismail Kawoosi.
The Islamic State (IS) militants claimed responsibility for twin explosions in Kabul whereas the Taliban strongly denied any involvement in the attack.
Nawaz Sharif condemns Kabul blasts
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif expressed deep grief over loss of precious lives in Kabul blasts.
In a statement issued in Islamabad, the prime minister said that everyone will have to take solid steps against terrorism. He said that Pakistan is playing its role against terrorism as frontline country.
