ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday directed the Attorney General Irfan Qadir to submit progress report pertaining to the implementation of court’s orders on electoral reforms on February 13, Dispatch News Desk (DND) reported.
A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Choudhry resumed hearing of the case today regarding implementation of court’s June 2012 order on electoral reforms.
During the course of hearing, Attorney General informed the court that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has forwarded its recommendations to the law ministry while petitioner’s recommendations have also been received, adding the law ministry is considering to recommend legislation in light of the recommendations.
Meanwhile, Justice Choudhry asked Qadir not to let this work for the law ministry alone, adding the attorney general should escalate the matter and talked to high-ups for early formulation of laws. “The court understands that the legislation will take time,” he remarked.
The chief justice said that ECP has already issued a code of conduct for the elections, adding the electoral process has begun in the country.
“There should not be any delay in elections on the pretext of legislation,” the chief justice said.
Later, the court adjourned the hearing till February 13.
