Taliban attack Afghan election headquarters ahead of polls

KABUL: As only a few days left for Afghanistan to hold its third presidential elections since the fall of the Taliban, militants attacked the headquarters of the Afghan election commission in Kabul on Saturday.

“I can confirm an attack at the IEC (Independent Election Commission) headquarters,” the IEC spokesman Noor Muhammad Noor told a foreign news agency.

“We heard two explosions inside the IEC compound, the sound of firing is still ongoing, but people are safe and are in (reinforced) safe rooms,” Noor added.

“Initial information shows that three or four attackers have occupied a building and are firing on the IEC office,” the Interior ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said in a statement.

On Friday, Taliban militants stormed a guest house in Kabul used by a US anti-landmine charity that left two persons killed.

The Afghan Taliban have vowed a campaign of violence to disrupt the polls scheduled for April 5, urging their fighters to attack polling staff, voters and security forces in the run-up to election day.
