Thailand to go for fresh polls on July 20

BANGKOK: Thailand will hold a new general election on July 20, the country’s election commission announced after meeting with Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and other officials on Wednesday.

“We agreed that the most suitable election day is July 20 and the EC will draft the royal decree for the prime minister to submit to the king for royal endorsement,” the commission secretary general Puchong Nutrawong told reporters.

Thailand held a general election on February 2 after Yingluck dissolved the parliament’s lower house in response to protests calling on her to step down.

However in late March, the constitutional court nullified the election because it failed to be held according to law after the protesters disrupted the registration process and voting.
