Three militants including TTP commander arrested in Balochistan

QUETTA, Pakistan: At least three militants including a banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Commander were arrested in Harnai district of southwestern Balochistan province on Saturday.

The arrests happened when the security forces conducted a raid in Harnai on a tip off regarding the presence of militants there, according to an intelligence officer.

The officer said that arms and ammunition were also recovered from the possession of militants.

A total of 1,859 suspects have been arrested from all over the country as part of the implementation of the anti-terror national action plan (NAP) adopted last month, according to a report on counter-terrorism arrests across Pakistan issued on Friday.

The report said that 958 people suspected of being involved in terrorism-related offenses have been arrested so far in Punjab, 244 suspects in Sindh, 234 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 188 in Balochistan and 235 in Islamabad.

The report says that 5,487 search operations have been conducted in Punjab as against 322 in Sindh, 1,223 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 12 in Balochistan and 275 in Islamabad.

The national action plan against terrorism was adopted in the wake of the deadly terror attack that hit an army-run school in Peshawar on December 16, claiming lives of 150 persons mostly children.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has asked the provincial governments to implement the NAP in its letter and spirit in order to eradicate the menace of terrorism and extremism from the country.

The prime minister also assured full support of the federal government in providing necessary resources for the capacity building of law enforcement agencies in all parts of the country.
