Treason case: Musharraf to appear before court on Feb 7: sources

ISLAMABAD: The former President Pervez Musharraf will appear before the special court on February 7 (Friday) to face treason charges, the sources close to the former president confirmed.

The sources said that a joint police team comprising personnel from Islamabad and Rawalpindi has been informed of Musharraf’s decision.

On January 31, a three-member special court headed by Justice Faisal Arab and comprising Justice Tahira Safdar and Justice Yawar Ali rejected the request of Musharraf to leave the country and issued a bailable arrest warrant against him.

The court formed to try Musharraf for high treason for conspiring against the Constitution by declaring emergency and overthrowing the superior judiciary in November 2007 announced its verdict on the medical report of the former president submitted by doctors of the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC) where he is currently under treatment.

The special court said that there was no reason why the former president couldn’t appear before the court to face treason charges. The court also ordered to produce Musharraf on February 7 before the court and directed Islamabad Police Inspector General to ensure the implementation of the verdict.

Musharraf was shifted to the AFIC in Rawalpindi last month after he suffered heart problem on his way to the special court to appear before it for the treason case.
