Two hanged to death in Lahore, Sahiwal

LAHORE, Pakistan: Two more death row prisoners were executed in Lahore and Sahiwal jails on Tuesday morning, taking the toll of executions carried out so far in Punjab to 53.

In Sahiwal’s central jail, a dual-murder convict Jafar alias Kali was hanged till death.

The convict was sentenced to death by an additional session judge in 2000 after he was found guilty of killing two siblings Khalil and Sadia over a land dispute in 1997.

Similarly, another condemned prisoner Tayyab Ghulam Nabi was hanged to death at the Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore.

Tayyab had killed Abrar in Toba Tek Singh during a scuffle in 2002. Later, a district court awarded him death penalty.

With latest executions, a total of 67 convicts have been executed who include 53 in Punjab, 11 in Sindh, one in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 2 in Azad Kashmir since December 17 last year when Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif lifted a six-year moratorium on the death penalty in the wake of a Taliban attack at the army-run school in Peshawar.

However, the United Nations, the European Union, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have urged the Pakistan government to re-impose the moratorium on the death penalty.
