U.S. Senate for $225 million emergency funding to Israel

Monitoring Desk:  The U.S. Senate goes for $225 million emergency funding to Israel and passed legislation funding for “Iron Dome” missile defense to protect Israel from Hamas attacks.

“The U.S. Senate unanimously passed legislation to provide $225 million in emergency funding for Israel’s “Iron Dome” missile defense system”, reports international media.

Senate Republicans tried to block broader spending bill that was largely intended to provide money to handle the current immigration crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border. However, legislation has passed now to protect Israel from Hamas attacks. To become law, the funding plan will move to the House of Representatives and be signed by President Barack Obama. Given U.S. lawmakers traditionally strong support for Israel, it is not expected to encounter significant resistance in the House. The vote came two days after the Pentagon announced ammunition deliveries to the Jewish state

What is  “Iron Dome” ?

The system uses radar, advanced tracking technology and anti-missile batteries to follow the trajectory of an incoming rocket or mortar and determine if it is headed for a major population center. If an urban area is threatened, interceptors are fired to detonate in the air in close proximity to the missile. Projectiles not posing a threat are allowed to fall in empty fields. The system targets short-range rockets with a range between 2 miles and 45 miles; interceptors cost as much $100,000 apiece.
