Ukrainians to vote in parliamentary elections on Sunday

KIEV, Ukraine: The Ukrainian people will cast their votes on Sunday to elect the representatives for the 450-seat parliament (Verkhovna Rada).

As many as 4.6 million Ukrainians are eligible to take part in the snap parliamentary elections which were announced by Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko on August 25 this year after he dissolved the country’s parliament.

A total of 29 political parties are taking part in the parliamentary elections. However, the opinion polls show that the president’s own party the Petro Poroshenko Bloc will win the elections but it may not be able to form a majority and may have to join forces with nationalist parties.

The parliamentary elections are being held amid the ongoing armed conflict between Kiev authorities and independence supporters of the country’s southeast.

The elections will not be held in Ukraine’s eastern regions including Russian-occupied Crimea and parts of Donetsk and Luhansk.
