UN Security Council calls for immediate ceasefire in Gaza

NEW YORK: An emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council was held in New York on Monday, during which it demanded immediate ceasefire in the Gaza strip.

The meeting had been convened at the request of Jordan to discuss Israeli aggression against Gaza which has so far claimed 435 lives of Palestinians.

A draft resolution moved by Jordan in the Council expresses “grave concern” at the high number of civilians including children killed in Gaza.

It calls for an immediate cease-fire, “including the withdrawal of Israeli occupying forces from the Gaza strip”.

Earlier, the UN Secretary General Ban ki Moon condemned the killing of dozens of Palestinians in the Gaza strip by the Israeli shelling. He called for an immediate end to two week long violence.
