WASHINGTON: The United States has hailed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s visit to New Delhi for inaugural ceremony of his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.
In a statement in Washington, the US State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki said the United States welcomes any and all steps that India and Pakistan take to strengthen their dialogue and cooperation.
“Broadly speaking, we continue to welcome any and all steps that India and Pakistan take to strengthen their dialogue and cooperation,” Psaki told reporters.
The spokesperson also reaffirmed US backing for economic efforts towards South Asian stability.
The Pakistani premier visit India on the invitation of the newly elected Indian Prime Minister Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Narendra Modi’s to attend his swearing-in ceremony in the forecourt of the majestic Rashtrapati Bhawan on Monday.
Sharif also held historic talks with Modi at Hyderabad House in New Delhi on Tuesday and later held separates meetings with the Indian President Mukherjee and former Indian prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
