WASHINGTON: The United States has once again urged Pakistan and India to resume the dialogue process as it wants to see a reduction in tensions between the two nuclear-armed South Asian nations.

“We certainly want to see a reduction in tensions between India and Pakistan,” the US State Department Deputy Spokesman Mark C. Toner said at a briefing in Washington.

The spokesman said that the US encourages the two countries to hold dialogue to reduce tensions, adding that it is in the interest of the entire world if the two countries reduce their tensions.

“It’s in the interests of everyone in the region and certainly everyone in the world. So as much as there can be dialogue there, as much as there can be a reduction in tensions, we would encourage that,” Toner said.

Moreover, Toner said that the US National Security Advisor Susan Rice met the Pakistani leadership last week and shared out assessment of the sources of regional violence and discussed ways to return the region to peace and stability.

In reply to a question about the presence of Haqqani Network in Pakistan, the US State Department deputy spokesman said that his country recognizes that there’s still a threat from these terrorist groups emanating from Pakistan.

“We want to see Pakistan take additional steps to address some of these threats,” Mark C. Toner said.
