KARACHI, Pakistan: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Rabita Committee on Tuesday announced the nomination of Waseem Akhter and Arshad Vohra for the post of mayor and deputy mayor, respectively of Karachi.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the MQM said that the decision was taken through secret balloting, adding that Waseem Akhter and Arshad Vohra took majority of votes in the secret balloting.

The MQM said that an oath taking ceremony will be held on December 16, 2015 at 05:00 pm in Lal Qila Ground Azizabad, Karachi to take oath from both the nominated candidates to vow for giving priority to serving Karachiites and respect and follow the party discipline.

Earlier as a result of third and last phase of local government elections held in Punjab’s 12 districts and six districts of Karachi on December 5, the MQM secured required majority for the Mayorship of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC).

The MQM won 135 seats out of total 209 Union Councils, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) secured 32 seats, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) 12 whereas the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) which had made an alliance succeeded to win only 19 seats collectively.
