ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The World AIDS Day was observed across the world including in Pakistan on Monday under the theme “Focus, Partner, Achieve: An AIDS-free Generation.”

The day is observed on December 1 every year, aiming to create awareness amongst the people about the epidemic.

It raises awareness across the world and in the community about the issues surrounding human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).

It is a day for people to show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died.

The World AIDS Day is one of the eight official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO) along with World Health Day, World Blood Donor Day, World Immunization Week, World Tuberculosis Day, World No Tobacco Day, World Malaria Day and World Hepatitis Day.

An estimated 34 million people are living with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS and more than 35 million have died from the disease.
