PESHAWAR: The death toll in yesterday’s suicide attack on an election corner meeting of Awami National Party (ANP) in the city area of Yakatoot, mounted to 17, reports Dispatch News Desk (DND) wire news agency.
According to SP City Khalid Hamdani, the suicide bomber targeted the ANP’s corner meeting held in Yakatoot in connection with electioneering in the run up to May 11 elections, killing 17 people including six policemen and injuring several others.
The police official said the bomber’s legs and head have been recovered from the blast site, adding at least six kilograms of explosives were used in the bombing.
Dr. Arshad Javed Chief Executive of Lady Reading Hospital where the blast victims were transported, said the deceased include SHO Kotwali Abid Khan, an ASI, two constables and ANP leader Ghulam Ahmed Bilour’s driver.
Dr. Arshad further said over 50 injured including children were also shifted to the hospital.
CCPO Peshawar Liaquat Ali said there are increased threats of terrorism thanks to the ongoing electoral campaign.
