ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The first polio case of 2019 in Pakistan has been reported in Bajaur agency wherein a polio virus has paralyzed an 11-month child, the Prime Minister’s Focal Person on Polio Eradication Babar Atta said.

In a series of tweets on Saturday, Babar Atta said that the polio case has been reported in Khar area of Bajaur, and it is the sixth such case in the region in last three months.

Babar Atta said that following the emergence of polio cases in the erstwhile Bajaur tribal region, his initiative of suspending seven polio officers over their negligence in the line of duty has been justified.

The prime minister’s focal person on polio eradication said that in 2017-18, no precautionary measures against polio was taken in tribal areas including in Bajaur, and rather the people were jubilated as those areas had become polio free.

In addition, Babar Atta said that the polio virus has also been detected from sewage in Lahore and Faisalabad. However, he added that, the administration didn’t bet an eye to the issue.

Babar Atta said that he now plan to review the measures taken in Rawalpindi, Lahore and Faisalabad to vanquish polio.
