Seven-month pregnant nurse died due to police torture in Lahore

LAHORE: A seven-month pregnant nurse lost her life on Friday after she was baton-charged by Punjab police while she along with other nurses was staging a sit-in protest in Lahore.

However, the spokesman health department Punjab has denied reports of any death of nurse during protest in the city.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) also joined the protest sit-in staged by nurses in front of Punjab assembly.

A large number of nurses had been staging sit-in for the last five days in front of DG health office in Lahore against the provincial government’s anti-nursing policies which caused restlessness among the nursing community in the province.

However, today when they started marching towards Punjab assembly, police resorted to baton charge them and arrested 10 nurses as well. Subsequently, many nurses sustained injuries while a 28-year-old nurse Rubina, who was in her seventh month of pregnancy and shifted to Ganga Ram hospital following being injured, succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.

The sources said that nurses in Faisalabad hospitals went on strike against police torture of nurses in Lahore.
