Pakistan calls upon UNSC members to urge India to respect ceasefire agreement

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The prime minister’s adviser on national security and foreign affairs Sartaj Aziz called upon five permanent members of the UN Security Council to urge India to respect the ceasefire agreement and engage in a meaningful and serious dialogue with Pakistan.

The adviser was briefing the ambassadors of the permanent members of the UN Security Council on the situation prevailing on the Line of Control (LoC) and the Working Boundary.

“The Adviser outlined Prime Minister’s vision of a peaceful South Asian region and his positive overtures to the Indian government since coming to power in May 2013, including reaching out to Prime Minister Modi,” the foreign office said.

Sartaj Aziz expressed his disappointment at the fact that first foreign secretary-level talks scheduled for August 25 were cancelled, and later India resorted to unprovoked firing and shelling on the LoC and the Working Boundary resulting in many civilian casualties, and extensive damage to property.

The prime minister’s adviser said that ceasefire violations by India and provocative statements by Indian leadership are not only a setback to peace efforts but also a distraction from Pakistan’s counter-terrorism commitments in the ongoing Operation Zarb-e-Azb.

The foreign secretary Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry also attended the briefing.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s ambassador to the United Nations Masood Khan has delivered Sartaj Aziz’s letter addressed on current situation on LoC to UN Secretary General.

The letter was also transmitted to Security Council President, ambassador Maria Cristina Perceval of Argentina.

The letter, in which Sartaj Aziz drew attention to the escalation of violence along the LoC and the Working Boundary, has now been issued as a document of the Security Council.
