Rasheed rejects MQM criticism on Nawaz’s Karachi visit

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Federal Information Minister Pervaiz Rasheed has said the Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) criticism of the visit of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to Karachi is unreasonable.

On Wednesday in the wake of deaths from the recent intense heatwave in Sindh, the prime minister paid a day-long visit to Karachi wherein he presided over a meeting to review the heatwave situation, water situation and main development projects.

Later in a statement, the MQM coordination committee termed the prime minister’s visit to Karachi ‘disappointing’ and said that it was regrettable that he showed a ‘lack of interest’ in solving the basic problems of the city.

The MQM coordination committee said that the prime minister did not announce any real relief measure for Karachi people to save them from the menace of load shedding and water shortage. It said that even the prime minister did not even bother to visit any hospital to inquire after the heatstroke patients.

But the information minister dismissed the MQM’s criticism saying that the prime minister met with all sections of society during his visit and issued necessary instructions regarding the recent heat wave in Karachi.

The minister said that the prime minister directed the relevant departments that effective protective measures should be taken to avoid recurrence of such events in future. He said that the prime minster is keen in resolving every issue related to Karachi.
