TRI congratulates Muhammad Irfan for IPCC elections

Islamabad, Pakistan: Developmental and environmental protection organizations of South Asia, Central Asia and Eastern Europe have congratulated the Director-General, Ministry of Climate Change of Pakistan, Muhammad Irfan Tariq for his election as vice chair of Working Group-I of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

The Region Initiative (TRI) in a statement issued here on Saturday congratulated Muhammad Irfan Tariq for becoming vice President of IPPCC. TRI believed that success of Pakistan in these elections is an important milestone and election of Irfan Tariq has brought a global recognition to efforts of Pakistan in the global fight against climate change.

It may be mentioned that the IPCC’s Working Group-I deals with “Physical Science Basis” assessments and the physical scientific aspects of the climate system and climate change.

IPCC also elected Valerie Masson-Delmotte as Co-Chair (France),Panmao Zhai as Co-Chair (China), Edvin Aldrian as Vice-Chair (Indonesia), Fatima Driouech as Vice-Chair (Morocco), Gregory Flato as Vice-Chair (Canada), Jan Fuglestvedt as Vice-Chair (Norway),Carolina Vera as Vice-Chair (Argentina) and Noureddine Yassaa as Vice-Chair (Algeria).

The Regional President for South Asia of TRI, Palitha Gurusenghe said that Pakistan was emerging strongly on the horizon of sustainability and environmental protection. He belived that TRI could work closely with government of Pakistan to share its experiences in tourism and environmental fields.  It may be mentioned that The Region Initiative (TRI) is a Tri-regional Umbrella of Tourism and environmental related organizations functioning in South Asia, Central Asia and Eastern Europe. It offers consultancy, networking of tourism organisations, tourism research opportunities, marketing of small tourism stakeholders, promotion of need of usage of renewable energies, advocate sustainable tourism and ecotourism. We are proud Associate Member of International Council of Tourism Partners (ICTP). TRI also collaborates with Sustainable Travel International (STI) for the ecotourism development.

TRI believes that tourism is one of the most effective tools for Peace that can be achieved through tourism and tourism should be considered not only a revenue provider but harmony and peace generator, and, therefore, be supported by United Nations bodies as a peace industry.

TRI believes that the agendas of governments are sometime contrary to needs and demands of tourism industry. In South Asia, governments of Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Afghanistan have different political and diplomatic conflicts and this is the lead reason that South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) has failed to establish interaction and strong networking in the field of tourism. There are also certain conflicts among Central Asian republics and also in Eastern Europe countries. Therefore chances of a solid networking and connection among tourism ministries of these countries is more myth than reality.
