ISLAMABAD/LAHORE: The Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) activists staged protests on Saturday in various parts of Punjab against the killing of their provincial leader Maulana Shamsur Rehman Muavia in Lahore.
Unidentified men shot dead the ASWJ Punjab leader Maulana Shamsur Rehman Muavia as he was going home after Friday prayers from Muhammadi Masjid at Ravi Road near Bhatti Chowk in Lahore. His killing triggered a strong condemnation by the group which announced a country-wide protest against the attack.
The ASWJ activists reportedly blocked Faizabad Interchnge causing a gridlock at Islamabad Highway on Saturday.
The infuriated protesters blocked Expressway, Murree Road and Kashmir Highway. The commuters travelling between Islamabad and Rawalpindi faced difficulties owing to the blockade of the road, as vehicles were lined up in long queues on all the links roads.
The motorway to Islamabad from Rawalpindi was also blocked causing inconvenience to the general public. Subsequently, police reached the area to avoid any untoward incident.
Likewise, the ASWJ activists also staged protest outside Masjid-e-Shuhada in Lahore. The protests in various parts of the city caused the closure of markets and roads including Mall road and Moj Darya road.
The angry protesters shouted slogans outside the Governor House and on Mall Road and demanded that the killers of their leader be caught as soon as possible.
