Control of Islamabad security not handed over to army: Rasheed

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The federal minister for information Pervaiz Rasheed has dismissed the impression that the control of Islamabad security has been handed over to the army.

In a statement, he said that the army has been given responsibility to maintain law and order in sensitive areas in the federal capital in the wake of the ongoing military operation Zarb-e-Azb.

The information minister said that the army has been given legal and constitutional protection to perform this duty. He said that the army was also provided legal cover to deal with terrorists and miscreants.

Rasheed further said that the step has nothing to do with political activities.

Earlier, the federal interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan while speaking to media representatives announced the government’s decision to call in the military to take control of Islamabad from August 1 for a period of three months.

Nisar said that the interior ministry under article 245 of the Constitution has sought the army’s services for maintaining law and order in the federal capital for a period of three months.
