CAIRO: The Egyptian authorities on Wednesday arrested senior Muslim Brotherhood leader Essam el-Erian as part of a crackdown against the Islamist movement that the ruling military regime ousted from power in July.
Erian, the deputy leader of the Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice party, was arrested from his house in New Cairo, an official said of the Interior Ministry said.
The official said that Erian was arrested on charges of inciting violence and aiding criminal acts.
